Thieves Steal Thousands of Oysters from Mar Menor Scientific Project

The disappearance of a substantial number of oysters from the Mar Menor has raised significant concerns among researchers. Approximately 1,000 oysters were part of the RemediOS2 project aimed at enhancing the species’ resilience. This unfortunate event has halted critical research that began four years ago.
Thieves Steal Thousands of Oysters from Mar Menor Scientific Project
Researchers from the Oceanography Center of Murcia have officially reported the loss. A complete line of research, including the oysters, vanished a week ago. The stolen oysters are vital for studying the biological recovery of this important bivalve species.
Impact on Research
Marina Albentosa, a researcher from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, expressed her dismay at the loss. She noted that this was the first generation of oysters cultivated at the RemediOS hatchery.
- Project Name: RemediOS2
- Research Duration: 4 years
- Number of Oysters Stolen: Approximately 1,000
The main objective of the RemediOS2 project was to develop oysters that can better withstand high temperatures. The Guardia Civil has been investigating the case since its discovery. Unfortunately, no leads have emerged regarding the missing oysters or the equipment used in the research.
Current Situation of the Project
The remaining oysters, which were not affected, are being safeguarded as researchers brainstorm ways to continue their work. However, Albentosa noted that the incident compromises the project’s third phase, limiting the original goals.
“It is crucial for society to understand that scientific installations in the sea must be respected,” added Albentosa. She emphasized the biological value of these oysters, despite their lack of economic significance.
The scientific community hopes for a resolution to the investigation, aiming to restore the integrity of their project and ensure the protection of valuable marine research in the future.
