Intoxicated Driver Admits Theft of Mother’s BMWs, Killing Friend, Insulting Responders

Kane Burrows, a 19-year-old from Calgary, has pleaded guilty to serious charges following a reckless series of events. Over a span of eight months, he stole two BMWs from his mother, drove under the influence, and was involved in two crashes resulting in tragic outcomes.

Details of the Charges

Burrows faced multiple charges, including:

  • Impaired driving causing death
  • Impaired driving causing injury
  • Dangerous driving

The incidents occurred in December 2024 and August 2025. Burrows’ license had been revoked in October 2024 after he failed to provide a breath sample to police.

First Crash: A Fatal Incident

The first crash took place on December 23, 2024, after Burrows stole his mother’s BMW convertible. He and friends visited a pub where he consumed alcohol. Witnesses reported Burrows acting dangerously in the parking lot, performing doughnuts before leaving.

While driving on Glenmore Trail, he reached speeds of 160 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. His passengers urged him to slow down, but he ignored their pleas. In a moment of recklessness, he swerved onto the shoulder and collided with a stationary crane truck.

Tragically, his friend Zachary Legault, 18, was severely injured in this crash and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Disrespect Towards First Responders

Upon the arrival of emergency personnel, Burrows displayed aggressive behavior. He threatened first responders and showed no concern for his injured friends. His uncooperative attitude necessitated sedation by paramedics at the scene. A blood test indicated his blood alcohol level at .154, nearly double the legal limit.

Second Incident: A Repeat Offense

On August 8, 2025, Burrows again stole a BMW from his mother. This time, he was clocked driving at 170 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. When officers attempted to stop him, he fled, striking multiple parked vehicles and reaching speeds of 124 km/h.

He was apprehended by police, who discovered open alcohol containers in the vehicle. Despite being released on bail, Burrows was later taken back into custody after the Crown’s successful appeal against his release.

Next Steps

Pre-sentence reports are currently underway, and Burrows is expected to be sentenced later this year. His actions serve as a stark reminder of the grave consequences of impaired driving.
