Situated along the picturesque Adriatic Sea, Rovigno has a rich maritime legacy characterized by its iconic fishing boat, the Batana. Once numbering 98, each Batana sported a distinct sail, representing its family’s identity. Today, this traditional vessel finds new life at an ecomuseum recognized by UNESCO for its efforts in preserving intangible heritage.
The Significance of the Batana in Rovigno
The Batana has been a vital part of Rovigno’s fishing culture. These wooden boats originated in the Marche region and were adapted in Rovigno during the 17th century. They featured sails, enhancing their visibility for fishermen navigating the Adriatic.
The Ecomuseum Experience
Located in the old fishing village, the Ecomuseum of Batana offers an interactive exhibition titled “Viaggio in batana.” This permanent installation immerses visitors in the life of Rovinj’s fishermen from the early 20th century. Through synchronized audiovisual presentations, the exhibition explores different aspects of maritime life, including:
- Star navigation techniques
- Local dialects and traditional songs
- Fishing practices and species, such as sole and sea bream
Additionally, the exhibit features Maria Spongia, the first woman to own a Batana, and showcases the lives of other notable women, including tobacco workers of the era.
Traditional Boat Characteristics
The Batana is distinctively designed with a flat, slightly curved bottom and varies in length between 4 and 8.5 meters. Made entirely of wood, it incorporates materials like oak and pine. Fishermen typically navigate with sails or oars, while long trips may call for a larger mainsail.
Proud Heritage and Modern Revival
Since 2004, the Ecomuseum and the city of Rovigno have promoted the construction of new Batana vessels. This initiative has preserved traditional boat-building skills, which have been recognized as part of Croatia’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. To date, seven Batana boats have been constructed, with an additional 36 restored.
Cultural Events and Community Engagement
The revival of the Batana has reconnected the community with its maritime history. Visitors can now enjoy rowing tours around Rovinj, attend concerts featuring traditional music, and participate in workshops on forgotten crafts.
Discovering Rovigno’s Culinary Delights
Rovigno is also home to the Spàcio, a local version of a tavern where residents once shared wine and social activities. One Spàcio, incorporated into the Ecomuseum in 2006, hosts various cultural events, emphasizing local delicacies like Malvasia wine and fresh seafood. Open during the summer months, it offers a vibrant atmosphere for visitors to experience traditional Rovinj hospitality.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Rovinj Regatta, celebrating traditional sailing vessels with lateen sails. The event continues to highlight the Batana’s legacy, drawing attention from both locals and visitors alike.
