Kremlin Claims Finland’s Nuclear Arsenal Threatens Russia

The Kremlin has voiced concerns regarding Finland’s legislative changes concerning nuclear weapons. According to Russian officials, these alterations are perceived as a potential threat to Russia.
Kremlin’s Reaction to Finland’s Nuclear Legislation Changes
On Friday, Dmitri Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian presidency, commented on Helsinki’s plans. He stated that Finland’s potential move to allow nuclear arms on its territory escalates tensions in Europe. Peskov emphasized, “By deploying nuclear weapons, Finland begins to threaten us.” He further warned that if Finland poses a threat, Russia would respond accordingly.
Finland’s Legislative Proposal
Finland announced on Thursday its intention to modify its laws concerning the presence of nuclear weapons. The Finnish Defense Minister, Antti Hakkanen, explained that the government’s proposal would enable the introduction, transportation, delivery, or possession of nuclear arms if deemed necessary for national security. He added that outside the specified military exceptions, all other activities related to nuclear explosives would remain illegal.
- Proposed changes aim to align with NATO’s deterrence policies.
- Finland’s security environment has shifted significantly since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
- Finland abandoned a long-standing policy of military neutrality by joining NATO in April 2023.
Legislative Process and Future Steps
The ruling right-wing coalition in Finland holds a parliamentary majority. They have submitted the proposed legislation for consultation until April 2, hoping for its swift adoption.
With this shift, Finland aims to align more closely with NATO standards, as many member countries do not impose similar restrictions on their defense and deterrence policies.
