The Canadian government has announced that it has secured a limited number of seats on commercial flights from Lebanon for its citizens and permanent residents. This move comes amid rising tensions due to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
Flight Availability Amid Conflict in Iran
As of Tuesday morning, approximately 103,800 Canadian citizens and permanent residents had registered with Global Affairs Canada (GAC) from the Gulf region. This figure may be underreported, as registration is voluntary.
Despite disruptions to air travel resulting from military actions, some commercial flight options from Lebanon remain operational. GAC reported that travellers must arrange their own accommodations, meals, and any onward travel.
Support for Departures from the Middle East
- Lebanon: 23,561 registered Canadians.
- United Arab Emirates: 28,107 registered Canadians.
- Iran: 2,958 registered Canadians.
The Canadian government has stated that it is not currently organizing assisted departures but is exploring various options for safe evacuation from multiple Middle Eastern countries.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand mentioned that Canada has requested access to Oman’s airspace if needed to help evacuate its citizens from the region. Anand emphasized the need for support as conditions evolve.
Travel Advisory for Canadians
Oman Air has cautioned travelers planning to use the land border to connect with flights from Muscat. It is recommended to arrive at the border at least 12 hours before departure due to higher traffic volumes and potentially extended processing times.
Assistance from Other Countries
The U.S. State Department is currently providing departure assistance for American citizens in the region. Travelers are advised to register with their respective governments to receive updates and travel options.
Canadians currently in Iran are encouraged to reach out for assistance or provide updates on their situation. The Canadian government is committed to ensuring the safety and support of its citizens during these tumultuous times.
