Ex-OPSEU Rep Allegedly Misappropriated Union Funds, Faces Charges

A former representative of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) is facing serious charges. Mark Babcook, previously the branch president of OPSEU Local 228, is accused of misappropriating over $100,000 in union funds.

Peel police announced that Babcook has been charged with:

  • Fraud over $5,000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime

His arrest took place on September 19, following an internal investigation by OPSEU, which prompted them to involve the Peel Regional Police. The investigation revealed evidence leading to criminal charges.

The alleged misconduct is reported to have occurred between:

  • December 10, 2023
  • November 4, 2024

Peel police received the initial report on March 21, 2025, after OPSEU concluded its internal review. At the time of his arrest, Babcook was no longer serving in his union position.

Upcoming Court Appearance

Babcook was released on conditions and is required to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton. His court date is scheduled for October 20.
