FDA Recalls Frozen Blueberries in Canada and U.S. Over Listeria Risk

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a significant recall of frozen blueberries due to listeria contamination concerns. This recall affects products distributed across Canada and several states in the United States, including Michigan, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Recall Details

Oregon Potato Company, based in Salem, Oregon, is recalling approximately 25,260 kilograms of “Individually Quick Frozen” (IQF) blueberries. The FDA raised the alarm over potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria known to cause listeriosis.

Health Risks of Listeria

Listeria monocytogenes poses serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations. Listeriosis symptoms can manifest suddenly and may include:

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Cramps
  • Severe headaches
  • Constipation
  • Fever

In severe cases, especially among newborns and the elderly, this infection can lead to dangerous complications such as brain inflammation, bloodstream infections, or even death.

Distribution and Packaging

These blueberries were not directly sold to consumers in retail environments. Instead, they were distributed in large quantities using specific packaging methods. The products were either contained in polyethylene bags within corrugated cases or packaged within polyethylene liners inside totes.

Recall Timeline

The recall was first publicly posted by the FDA on February 12. It was categorized as a “Class I” recall on February 24, indicating a high level of concern. A Class I recall indicates that there is a strong likelihood that exposure to the product could result in severe health issues or death.

Consumers are advised to stay informed regarding the ongoing recall and to take necessary precautions should they have purchased these frozen blueberries. For further updates and detailed information, please refer to El-Balad.
