Suspended Beaufort Co. Sheriffs Deputy Faces Internal Investigation

Beaufort County Deputy Suspended Amid Internal Investigation into Gun Incident

In Beaufort County, South Carolina, the Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating an incident involving an off-duty deputy who was suspended without pay following a disturbance report in the Hilton Head community. The incident took place on Sunday evening around 6:47 PM, with deputies responding to calls about a disturbance in the neighborhood.

Upon arrival, deputies found the off-duty deputy involved in a situation within his own neighborhood. Subsequently, a command staff member relieved him of his law enforcement credentials, badge, and department-issued firearm and equipment. This measure was taken promptly after the incident to ensure accountability and adherence to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) standards.

Internal Investigation and SLED Involvement

The BCSO has stated that all deputies are expected to uphold high standards of conduct in line with their policies, both on and off duty. The ongoing internal investigation managed by the Internal Affairs division may require several interviews and could be time-consuming. In tandem, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been requested to investigate the incident for any potential criminal violations.

The BCSO clarified that the two investigations would run parallel, adhering to the guidelines set by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The BCSO emphasized the importance of transparency and integrity regarding the incident.

Video Evidence Raises Concerns

Video footage from the incident has emerged on social media, reportedly showing the deputy drawing his firearm and pointing it at three teenagers. While the graphic language has been removed from the video, viewer discretion is advised due to its content. In the footage, the deputy appears to respond to the claims of the teenagers, who pleaded for police assistance while identifying themselves as innocent parties.

Neighbors have indicated that the deputy was called to the scene by a resident but did not clarify the circumstances that warranted his presence. The video captures intense moments, including the deputy’s actions that led to drawing his weapon when one of the teenagers approached the scene.

Community Response and Next Steps

The identity of the deputy involved will be disclosed at a later date, as indicated by the BCSO, which is currently not fielding any further questions on the matter. Community members with information related to the incident, including additional video footage, are encouraged to reach out to the Internal Affairs Investigator at 843-255-3404.

This incident serves as a significant point of discussion within the community regarding police accountability and use of force by law enforcement, especially involving off-duty members. As the investigations unfold, residents of Beaufort County will be keenly observing the outcomes and any subsequent actions taken by the Sheriff’s Office.
