Pacers Update: Bradley, Toppin, Furphy Strategies Before Trade Deadline

As the NBA trade deadline approaches, the Indiana Pacers are assessing their roster and potential moves. Key updates involve players Tony Bradley, Obi Toppin, and Johnny Furphy.

Bradley’s Status with the Pacers

Tony Bradley is currently a free agent after completing his second 10-day contract with the Pacers. Coach Rick Carlisle stated that a decision on Bradley’s future with the team will likely come after the trade deadline. Carlisle mentioned, “There is a chance he could be back for us.”

Bradley has had a dynamic season, initially securing a roster spot with a non-guaranteed contract. However, he was waived on January 5, just before his salary of $2,940,876 became guaranteed. He rejoined the Pacers on a 10-day deal three days later, followed by an additional 10-day contract on January 19.

To date, Bradley has participated in 38 games this season, averaging 4.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in 10.9 minutes. Carlisle has praised Bradley’s performance, highlighting his rebounding, defense, and ability to play within the team’s system.

Obi Toppin’s Recovery

Obi Toppin is recovering from a stress fracture in his left foot, which required surgery in November. Carlisle provided an update on Toppin’s progress, noting that he is ahead of schedule but still some time away from returning to play.

Recent On-Court Activities

Toppin has resumed some on-court work, although he is not yet ready for game action. Carlisle reassured fans that Toppin is on track but emphasized the importance of patience in his recovery process.

Furphy’s Impact

Johnny Furphy has been making a strong impression on the coaching staff with his defensive skills. He played a crucial role in the final defensive possession during the recent win against Chicago. With 16 starts in the last 17 games, Furphy is establishing himself as a permanent member of the rotation.

Coach Carlisle commended Furphy’s toughness and ability to manage pressure without fouling. His development indicates he could play an essential role for the Pacers going forward.

Upcoming Trade Strategies

With an open roster spot and approximately $5.5 million available under the luxury tax line, the Pacers are exploring trade opportunities before the deadline. They are also considering utilizing their remaining non-taxpayer mid-level exception and a Disabled Player Exception connected to Tyrese Haliburton’s injury.

  • Player Updates:
    • Tony Bradley: Free agent, past 10-day contracts.
    • Obi Toppin: Recovering from injury, ahead of schedule.
    • Johnny Furphy: Key defensive player, strong rotation contender.
