Northern California Protests Surge Against ICE Actions, Minneapolis Shooting

Protests erupted across Northern California on Saturday, driven by ongoing tensions surrounding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions. These demonstrations were fueled by a recent shooting incident in Minneapolis involving immigration authorities.
Northern California Demonstrations Against ICE
Protests were observed in cities such as Roseville and Sacramento, illustrating a divided sentiment on immigration issues. The gatherings drew individuals advocating for a halt to ICE operations as well as supporters of immigration law enforcement.
Events in Roseville
- A planned pro-ICE rally by Freedom Riders 1776 was canceled.
- One supporter still attended despite the cancellation.
- A counter-protest formed nearby, organized by Placer County Against Fascism.
During this counter-protest, participants condemned ICE enforcement and cited escalating violence linked to immigration actions. “I’m just heartbroken by the state of this country,” remarked Sophie Aguaristi from El Dorado Hills. She emphasized the negative impact of hate and violence.
Support for ICE
Juan Gonzalez from Woodland expressed his support for ICE, acknowledging the need for reforms while stressing that immigration laws should be respected. “This country was built on immigrants, but it’s also a country of laws,” he stated.
Sacramento Protest and March
Later in the day, activists gathered outside the federal building in downtown Sacramento for what was characterized as an emergency protest. Organized by the group 50501, the focus was on immigration reform and establishing pathways to citizenship.
- Chris Bennett, a protester, called for “reasonable pathways to citizenship.”
- He was motivated by the deadly shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti during an encounter with ICE.
Following their assembly, demonstrators marched through downtown Sacramento, passing major landmarks like the Golden 1 Center, and headed towards the State Capitol. Sacramento police monitored the situation, ensuring that the events remained orderly.
Peaceful Outcome
By the evening, the protests concluded without any reported arrests. Authorities confirmed a peaceful atmosphere throughout both demonstrations. Activists like Gage Rutledge from Nevada City expressed the urgency of raising awareness, citing the need for attention to the number of deaths occurring amidst these conflicts.
