Emergency Declared: Snowstorm to Cause Widespread Power Outages

Governor Abigail Spanberger has declared a state of emergency in Virginia ahead of an impending snowstorm expected this weekend. This decision comes as forecasts indicate significant snow accumulation, ice, and potential power outages across the state.

Details of the Emergency Declaration

The executive order was signed today in anticipation of severe winter weather, which is projected to peak on Saturday and Sunday. The D.C. area may see over 5 inches of snow, with some regions expecting double-digit snowfall amounts.

Governor Spanberger emphasized the complexity of the upcoming storm. She noted that a combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, along with low temperatures, will create challenging conditions for response efforts.

Power Outage Preparations

  • Aisha Khan, representative from Dominion Energy, shared that preparations are underway to tackle potential blackouts.
  • The power outages are expected to be exacerbated by downed trees and power lines.
  • Significant restoration efforts may be needed, as severe cold is anticipated to follow the storm.

Dominion Energy is mobilizing hundreds of crews and support staff, including contractors to assist with power restoration. They encourage customers to report any outages through their app or helpline.

Transportation Readiness

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is actively preparing for the storm’s impact. Spokesperson Ellen Kamilakis announced that salt trucks are already deployed in Northern Virginia, with efforts continuing through tomorrow.

  • VDOT anticipates high deployment levels to clear snow and manage icy conditions.
  • Commuters are urged to avoid traveling during the storm and in its immediate aftermath.

Clearing operations are expected to take several days, given the forecasted conditions. Pre-positioned resources will assist in addressing snow and ice, as well as clearing disabled vehicles from roadways.

Residents’ Safety Recommendations

Residents are encouraged to prepare for the storm by implementing safety measures. Arlington County initiated snow preparation efforts yesterday, advising the public to apply salt or other de-icers lightly on surfaces.

If travel is unavoidable, residents should pack an emergency winter weather kit. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management recommends including:

  • Blankets
  • Drinking water
  • Snacks
  • Boots
  • A first-aid kit
  • A warm coat
  • Rags and basic tools

The agency also cautions that it is difficult to predict how long individuals may be stranded, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in hazardous winter conditions.
