“Urgent: Discard Canned Tuna from These Stores Now”

Consumers are warned to discard canned tuna from certain stores due to potential contamination risks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall impacting several states.

Recall Details and Cause

Tri-Union Seafoods initiated a voluntary recall last February. This action was prompted by a manufacturing defect in the “easy open” pull tabs of specific canned tuna products. Over time, this defect may compromise the product seal, leading to leaks and potential contamination from Clostridium botulinum.

Clostridium botulinum can cause botulism, a serious food poisoning that may be life-threatening. As a result of ongoing assessments, Tri-Union identified more affected canned tuna shipments distributed to third-party retail outlets.

Affected Retail Stores

The contaminated tuna products were distributed to various retail stores across nine states:

  • Meijer (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin)
  • Giant Foods (Maryland, Virginia)
  • Safeway
  • Albertsons
  • Vons
  • Pavilions (California)
