Austin’s Dittmar Road Community Fridge to Close on February 1

On February 1, the community fridge on Dittmar Road in Austin is set to close. This decision comes as challenges surrounding cleanliness and maintenance have grown unmanageable for volunteers from the ATX Free Fridge Project.
Background on the Dittmar Road Community Fridge
The fridge located near South First and Dittmar streets is one of five operated by the ATX Free Fridge Project. This initiative began during the pandemic to address food insecurity in the area. The concept is straightforward: community members can take what they need and leave what they can. No identification or paperwork is required.
Community Impact
- Average of 300 openings per day across the fridges.
- Features include a pantry for shelf-stable items and a bulletin board for local announcements.
- Approximately six visitors frequently stop by in a short span to access food.
The project aims to create a supportive environment for those in need. Volunteers like Stephanie Castleberry, who oversees multiple fridges, report people often line up to receive donated items. However, maintaining cleanliness has proven to be a challenge.
Challenges Faced
Despite the initiative’s positive impact, the Dittmar Road location has faced issues with litter and discardable items. Many users, including long-time visitor Lannie Lee, express concerns over hygiene, stating that they hesitate to access the fridge without gloves due to the unsanitary conditions.
Castleberry acknowledged that the constant need for cleaning has made it difficult to keep the fridge operational. Earlier, the fridge on Second Street also shut down for similar reasons.
Closing Announcement
The Dittmar fridge will officially close on February 1 due to these ongoing issues. Castleberry emphasizes the need for community involvement to maintain the fridges. Efforts made through text chains and calls for action haven’t produced sufficient results, with many clean-up slots remaining unfilled.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, volunteers are hopeful for the future of the project. Plans are underway to establish three additional fridges in Montopolis, Franklin Park, and North Austin. There is also an intention to replace the Dittmar fridge in a nearby location.
Castleberry reiterated the importance of community support, urging individuals to take an active role in maintaining the cleanliness of these vital resources. “If you want this cool thing to stay here and stay cool, then you gotta put in a little more effort,” she stated.
