Governor Mills Unveils Decisions on Previously Held Legislative Bills

Governor Janet Mills has made significant decisions regarding previously held legislative bills from the last session. In a recent announcement, she revealed that 52 out of 61 bills will become law. Additionally, the Legislature recalled seven bills for further consideration in the upcoming session.
Key Decisions on Legislative Bills
The decision to allow the majority of the bills to become law was influenced by the Governor’s commitment to thorough review. Governor Mills stated, “I appreciate the hard work of the Legislature. These decisions reflect careful consideration of each bill.”
Veto of LD 1228
Governor Mills has vetoed one bill, LD 1228, which focuses on clarifying terms in the Automotive Right to Repair Laws. She expressed concerns that the bill could negatively impact local auto repair shops in Maine. According to the Governor, the veto aligns with the will of the people, as expressed in the 2023 “Right to Repair” referendum.
Timeline for Legislative Actions
The bills held from the previous session were reviewed after the Legislature adjourned in June. The Constitution provides the Governor a 10-day period to consider these bills. If not signed, she can either veto or allow them to pass into law after three days of the next session.
The newly enacted laws will come into effect 90 days following the adjournment of the upcoming legislative session. Bills enacted as emergencies will take effect immediately after the session’s third day.
