Michigan State’s Starting TE Transfers to SEC School

Michael Masunas, the starting tight end for Michigan State, has announced his transfer to Texas in the SEC. This decision comes as part of a broader trend of player movements in college football.

Player Profile: Michael Masunas

Masunas, a redshirt junior, stands 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 259 pounds. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining. Over his career with the Spartans, he played in 25 games, recording 24 catches for 270 yards and three touchdowns.

Career Highlights

  • Redshirted in his first season (2022)
  • Participated mainly on special teams in the 2023 season
  • Started the first four games of 2024
  • Achieved career highs this season with 19 catches for 232 yards and three touchdowns

Impact on Michigan State Football

The departure of Masunas adds to the challenges for new Michigan State coach Pat Fitzgerald, who is facing a significant player turnover. Over 40 players have entered the transfer portal, necessitating a major rebuilding effort.

Additional Transfers

Masunas is not the only player making a move. Several other Spartans announced their commitments on the same day:

  • Justin Bell transferring to Virginia Tech
  • Rashawn Rogers committing to Ferris State

Furthermore, starting long snapper Jack Wills, a true freshman, has also decided to transfer.

As Michigan State navigates this transition, the team will need to fill key positions, including tight end, in order to maintain competitiveness in upcoming seasons.
