Iga Swiatek: Women’s Tennis Thrives Independently Without ‘Battle of the Sexes’

Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek recently discussed the state of women’s tennis, asserting that it thrives independently without the need for events like the ‘Battle of the Sexes.’

Contemporary Women’s Tennis Stands Alone

Swiatek’s comments came after a widely publicized exhibition match between Aryna Sabalenka and Nick Kyrgios, which took place in Dubai. Kyrgios emerged victorious in straight sets on a modified court aimed at creating an equitable playing environment.

Swiatek’s Perspective

The world number two, Iga Swiatek, stated that her focus is not on such exhibitions. She emphasized that while events like the recent match attract spectators, they do not contribute to meaningful social change. Swiatek remarked, “I haven’t watched [Sabalenka v Kyrgios] because I don’t watch stuff like that.”

She further explained, “It was entertainment, but I wouldn’t say that had anything to do with social change or any important topics.” Swiatek compared the event to the iconic 1973 ‘Battle of the Sexes’ between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, noting that women’s tennis has evolved significantly since then.

A Legacy of Independence

In her view, the modern women’s game stands strong and requires no comparisons with men’s tennis. Swiatek highlighted, “We have so many great athletes and great stories to present, we don’t necessarily need to compare to men’s tennis.” This statement underscores the progress made by female athletes in tennis.

Swiatek’s assertions indicate a confident future for women’s tennis, which aims to continue building its own legacy and independence in the sporting world.
