Avalanche Victim Named as Fresh Details Unfold

On January 5, search efforts concluded in Truckee, California, after confirming all individuals involved in a recent avalanche incident were safe. The avalanche occurred during a snowmobiling trip near Castle Peak.

Avalanche Incident Details

A group of five experienced snowmobilers embarked on their adventure from the Johnson Canyon area. This group, well-prepared for backcountry exploration, included:

  • Two locals familiar with the terrain, one certified in CPR.
  • Three visitors from Bend, Oregon, including another CPR-certified individual.

Victim Identified

While returning from Castle Peak, an avalanche was triggered, burying Chris Scott Thomason, 42, from Bend, Oregon. The group quickly activated Thomason’s beacon and began excavation efforts. They successfully unearthed him and initiated CPR.

Shortly after, a trio of bystanders, including an off-duty firefighter from Truckee, arrived to assist. This medic took charge of the emergency response and continued CPR. Unfortunately, despite the rigorous life-saving efforts, Thomason did not survive the ordeal.

Appreciation for the Rescue Efforts

The local Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to nearly 50 individuals who contributed to the rescue mission. The collaboration between Thomason’s friends and the Good Samaritans exemplified community support during a crisis.
