Queens Democrats Nominate DSA’s Diana Moreno to Succeed Mamdani

On Monday, the Queens Democratic Party nominated Diana Moreno to become the party’s candidate for Assembly District 36. This special election will fill the seat previously held by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, with voting scheduled for February 3.

Diana Moreno: The Democratic Socialist Candidate

Moreno expressed gratitude for her nomination, referring to it as “the honor of a lifetime.” She acknowledged the support from local Democratic District Leaders and Congressmember Gregory Meeks, who entrusted her with the responsibility of succeeding Mamdani.

Background and Experience

  • Moreno is a member of the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
  • She is an immigrant from Ecuador.
  • Her campaign began in October and has received endorsements from Mamdani and NYC-DSA.
  • Before her candidacy, Moreno worked for nonprofit organizations dedicated to immigrant advocacy.
  • She served as co-chair of NYC-DSA’s Queens branch.

In her statement, Mamdani praised Moreno’s dedication: “I can’t imagine anyone more capable of carrying our movement forward.” He highlighted her commitment to union workers and immigrant communities as essential attributes for the district’s representation.

Selection Process for the Nominee

Moreno was chosen as the Democratic nominee after a vote by Congressmember Meeks, the county chair, and four district leaders. This vote took place on Monday at 9 a.m. Since there is no primary election for the special election, this selection granted her the party nomination.

Congressmember Meeks stated, “By nominating Diana Moreno, we are advancing a leader focused on making New York more affordable for working families.” This endorsement emphasizes the urgency of her platform.

Political Landscape in Queens

Interestingly, Moreno represents a shift in the traditional support of the Queens Democratic Party. The party has historically backed moderate candidates from southeast Queens, a demographic that includes many Black and brown homeowners.

The rise of DSA-aligned candidates has changed the dynamics in western Queens, despite the county party’s challenges in adapting. Meeks had previously withheld support from Mamdani during his candidacy for mayor.

Implications of Moreno’s Candidacy

Should the party have ignored Moreno, she could still have run as a third-party candidate, posing a potential threat to the Democratic nominee. Support from Mamdani and DSA may enhance her chances of winning, making her a formidable candidate in “The People’s Republic of Astoria.”

Additionally, Moreno faces competition from three other candidates: Rana Abdelhamid, Mary Jobaida, and Shivani Dhir. However, she is the sole candidate featured on the special election ballot as the Democratic nominee.

With strong backing from Mamdani, DSA, and the county party, Moreno is positioned as a likely successor to represent Astoria in the New York State Assembly.
