Matt Benning Debuts; Joseph Woll Starts as Maple Leafs Face Islanders

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced a significant lineup change ahead of their match against the New York Islanders. Matt Benning will make his debut with the team, replacing Philippe Myers, who played only 8:41 in the previous victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

Matt Benning Makes His Maple Leafs Debut

Benning, acquired from the San Jose Sharks on October 31, 2024, arrived in exchange for Timothy Liljegren. The veteran defenseman has a wealth of experience, with over 450 games in the NHL. He has demonstrated his abilities while with the Toronto Marlies, recording two goals and eight assists in just 16 games this season.

Coaching Insights

Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube cited defensive struggles as the reason for the change. Myers was on the ice for three goals against the Jets, prompting Berube to see what Benning could bring to the lineup. “He’s a competitor and brings good experience,” Berube stated. “He moves well and competes.”

Defense Pairings Adjustments

With Benning’s entry, Berube adjusted the defensive pairings:

  • Troy Stecher with Morgan Rielly
  • Jake McCabe with Oliver Ekman-Larsson
  • Simon Benoit paired with Matt Benning

Berube highlighted Stecher’s recent performance against the Jets, where he played a significant role with a goal and over 24 minutes of ice time. “He’s a good fit,” Berube added regarding Stecher, noting his ability to adapt to various roles on the ice.

Joseph Woll to Start Against Islanders

Joseph Woll will take to the goal for his 15th start of the season. Despite being pulled in the last game against the Jets after conceding four goals on 17 shots, Woll’s overall performance this season has been strong. He holds an 8-4-1 record with a .916 save percentage through 14 games.

Woll’s potential and talent remain a point of focus for the Maple Leafs as they prepare to face the Islanders.
