World Welcomes 2026: Countries Celebrate with Photos and Videos

The arrival of the year 2026 was celebrated worldwide, marking significant events across different countries. Kiribati was the first nation to welcome the New Year, as it lies ahead of most countries in the world. This Pacific island nation consists of 33 atolls, and it uniquely adjusted its time zones in 1994 to unify the date across its islands.
Global Celebrations for New Year 2026
As 2026 greeted the world, New Zealand followed Kiribati’s lead. Auckland celebrated with a stunning fireworks display launched from the Sky Tower, the country’s tallest building at 240 meters. However, due to forecasts predicting rain and storms, many smaller events in New Zealand were canceled.
Special Remembrance in Sydney
Australia’s eastern region, particularly Sydney, welcomed the New Year at 2 PM Polish time. The celebrations in Sydney were notably subdued due to a recent tragic mass shooting at Bondi Beach, which occurred in December. To honor the victims, certain festivities were canceled, including the Elrow Bondi Beach XXL music festival. Fireworks displays were reduced in number as well.
- At 11 PM local time (1 PM in Poland), a minute of silence was observed.
- The Sydney Harbour Bridge was lit in white, and a menorah symbolizing Judaism was displayed on its pylons.
Celebrations in Hong Kong and Mainland China
Hong Kong’s government took the unprecedented step of canceling its famous fireworks display over Victoria Harbour. Instead, a light show illuminated the skyscrapers, accompanied by a subdued concert at Chater Road. This decision stemmed from a tragic fire at Wang Fuk Court, which claimed at least 161 lives.
In mainland China, police issued warnings in several cities like Guangzhou and Xi’an to prevent large gatherings. Most cities canceled outdoor events, but Wuhan hosted a light show and countdown at the historical Yellow Crane Tower. The New Year’s Day in China is primarily observed as an official holiday, with the more significant Lunar New Year taking place on February 17.
Festivities in Taiwan
In stark contrast, Taiwan embraced the New Year with vibrancy. In Taipei, a celebration under the theme “Sailing into the Future” attracted large crowds to the iconic Taipei 101. The K-pop group KARA headlined the event, and at midnight, a spectacular six-minute fireworks display animated the sky. This display employed low-smoke pyrotechnics from Italy, synchronized with music composed by local artists.
Conclusion
The final places to welcome 2026 will be the uninhabited Baker and Howland Islands in the central Pacific. They will ring in the New Year several hours after many regions worldwide have already begun the celebrations.
