Onondaga County Braces for 20-30 Inches of Snow; Travel Advisory Tonight

Onondaga County is preparing for a significant snowstorm expected to deliver 20 to 30 inches of snow from late Monday through Tuesday afternoon. County Executive Ryan McMahon announced these details during a press briefing on Monday.
Travel Advisory Issued
As the storm approaches, McMahon indicated he would issue a travel advisory later today. He warned that if snowfall rates exceed one to two inches per hour, snowplows may struggle to keep roads clear, even at full capacity. In that scenario, a declaration for “no unnecessary travel” could be issued overnight.
Worst-Case Scenario
McMahon outlined the potential for a more severe situation, including an “all-out travel ban” if conditions worsen. The heavy lake-effect snow is anticipated to start around 1 a.m. tonight and persist until 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
Wind and Operations
Wind gusts accompanying the snow may reach between 50 to 60 mph. To manage the storm’s impact, the county plans to partially activate its emergency operations center to enhance communication among various officials and agencies.
Snowplow Readiness
All county snowplows will be deployed, alongside city of Syracuse plows. However, McMahon noted that county plows are not suited for narrow city side streets. If Syracuse requests assistance for clearing main roads, the county stands ready to help.
