Major Storm Hits Quebec: Power Outages and Potential Damage

A major storm is set to hit Quebec, causing widespread power outages and potential damage throughout the region. The weather event is characterized by a powerful depression accompanied by strong gusts of wind and significant rainfall, expected to occur on Friday.
Weather Forecast and Impacts
Forecasters anticipate wind gusts ranging from 90 to over 100 km/h on Friday. These conditions pose a serious risk to the electrical grid in various regions. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued wind warnings across the southern areas of the province, suggesting that gusts could peak at 110 km/h, particularly in Gaspésie.
Electrical Outages
- Nearly 25,000 power outages reported by Friday morning.
- More than 7,000 outages were recorded in Montérégie alone.
Hydro-Québec has warned that the strong winds could cause branches to break and damage infrastructure, leading to further outages. As the storm progresses, conditions are likely to worsen, putting additional strain on the power network.
Rainfall Warnings
In addition to the wind, significant rainfall is expected. ECCC has issued an orange-level rainfall warning for areas including Charlevoix and the northern regions around Quebec City. Up to 60 mm of rain is forecasted in mountainous regions such as the Laurentians Wildlife Reserve.
Flooding Risks
With frozen ground and waterways, local soil is unable to absorb the anticipated rainfall, which increases the likelihood of surface runoff. This scenario raises concerns about:
- Local flooding.
- Accumulation of water on roads.
- Overflowing rivers and streams.
In Montreal, rain accumulation is expected to be between 10 and 20 mm, while northern regions could receive up to 50 mm. As conditions evolve, residents are urged to stay vigilant and prepared for potentially hazardous weather.
School Closures
In response to the impending storm, over 40 schools in the Mauricie region have announced closures for the day. The swift return of cold weather is also anticipated for Saturday, leading to caution around icy surfaces.
Quebec residents are advised to take precautions and monitor updates from local authorities and weather services as the storm unfolds.
