Patrick Mahomes Targets 2026 Week 1 Return After Knee Surgery Rehab

Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, is aiming for a return in 2026, specifically targeting Week 1. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation following knee surgery. Mahomes plans to return to Kansas City by Friday to continue his recovery with the team’s medical staff.
Current Status of Chiefs’ Players
The Chiefs are facing multiple injury challenges. Besides Mahomes, several key players are in question for upcoming games.
- Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton (Wide Receivers) – both are in concussion protocol.
- Jaylon Moore (Left Tackle) – dealing with a knee injury.
- Jawaan Taylor (Right Tackle) – out due to an elbow issue.
- Trent McDuffie (Cornerback) – managing a knee injury.
- Leo Chenal (Linebacker) – suffering from a shoulder problem.
None of these players were able to practice on Wednesday, adding to the concerns for the Chiefs.
Rehabilitation Efforts for Mahomes
Mahomes’ rehabilitation is being led by Julie Frymyer, his assistant trainer and top physical therapist. Frymyer gained attention during the 2022-23 playoffs for her role in Mahomes’ quick recovery from a high-ankle sprain.
Head coach Andy Reid has been in constant contact with Mahomes, discussing his progress daily. “He’s so positive right now,” Reid stated. Mahomes exhibits a determined mindset, emphasizing the importance of his recovery routine. Reid emphasized the significance of attitude in healing. “His attitude is 90% of things,” he said, highlighting how crucial it is for Mahomes to push through the pain during rehabilitation.
Support from Teammates
Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew shared insights about Mahomes’ ongoing support for the team. Minshew noted the odd feeling of training without Mahomes but acknowledged that they’ve remained in touch. “He’s been texting the QB room, very positive,” Minshew said, expressing appreciation for Mahomes’ encouragement. “That dude still wants us to win.”
As Mahomes focuses on his recovery, the Chiefs continue to navigate injury challenges with the hope of a successful season.
