Xcel Energy May Cut Power in Colorado Wednesday Amid Dry, Windy Weather

Xcel Energy has issued a warning to Colorado residents about potential power outages on Wednesday due to severe dry and windy conditions. According to Andrew Holder, Community Relations Director at Xcel, these extreme circumstances pose a heightened risk for wildfires.
Potential Public Safety Power Shutoff
To mitigate risks, Xcel may implement a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), a measure taken as a last resort. This action temporarily disconnects power to reduce the chances of fire ignitions caused by electrical sparks.
Current Weather Conditions
- Forecast wind speeds: 70 to 80 mph.
- Extended dry conditions with minimal snowfall.
Xcel’s meteorological team is monitoring the situation continuously. They track various factors such as wind speed, humidity, and moisture levels in the fuel, as these affect wildfire risk significantly.
Areas Affected
Possible outages could impact a wide area stretching from Fort Collins to the Eastern Plains and the Pueblo region. The strongest winds are anticipated around noon on Wednesday.
Impact on Local Schools
The Jefferson County School District, the second-largest in Colorado, announced it is in consultation with Xcel regarding any necessary schedule changes for schools. So far, no immediate alterations to school operations have been made.
Restoration and Safety Measures
Xcel crews aim to restore power as swiftly as possible but may face prolonged outages due to harsh working conditions. Holder noted that customers should remain patient during this process.
In addition to the PSPS, Xcel is employing Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings. This technology maintains electricity in power lines but is more sensitive to interference, automatically cutting power if an object comes into contact with the lines.
Collaboration with Emergency Services
Xcel is working with emergency management offices and critical infrastructure, including hospitals, to lessen the impact of potential outages. This upcoming PSPS would mark only the second occurrence in Colorado, the first being in April 2024.
Preparedness Tips
To assist residents in preparing for potential power outages, Xcel has provided several recommendations:
- Stay informed: Update contact information via Xcel’s My Account and check the statewide outage map.
- Build an emergency kit: Include flashlights, batteries, radio, phone chargers, bottled water, non-perishable food, and a manual can opener.
- Charge devices: Ensure phones and medical equipment have sufficient battery life.
- Report outages: Use the Xcel Energy mobile app, visit xcelenergy.com/out, text OUT to 98936, or call 1-800-895-1999.
