Overnight Closures Announced for Highway 99 and Highway 1

Drivers are being alerted to overnight closures on two significant highways connecting the Lower Mainland with the interior of British Columbia. These closures are a precautionary measure due to anticipated heavy rainfall.

Scheduled Closures for Highway 99 and Highway 1

Highway 99 will be closed from 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, until the morning of December 15. This closure affects the section between Mount Currie and Lillooet.

Similarly, Highway 1 will be closed from 10 p.m. on December 14 until the morning of December 15. This closure runs through the Fraser Canyon, from Hope Junction to Lytton.

Reasons for the Closures

  • Increased risk of rockfall and debris flows.
  • Known slide areas and damaged slopes from recent wildfires.
  • Proactive response to expected heavy rainfall and snowpack melt.

Weather Warnings and Expected Rainfall

Environment Canada has issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall. The forecast predicts:

  • Up to 70 mm of rain in Howe Sound, Whistler, and Pemberton.
  • Up to 60 mm in the lower Fraser Canyon.

Ongoing Monitoring and Updates

Both highways will undergo assessments in the morning of December 15. Travelers should remain vigilant, as closures may occur unexpectedly if weather conditions deteriorate.
