Sanju Samson Faces Drop from Playing XI Despite Past Opportunities

India’s T20I team is undergoing significant changes ahead of the five-match series against South Africa, starting Tuesday in Cuttack. With the return of Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya, discussions about player positions have intensified, particularly surrounding Sanju Samson.
Sanju Samson’s Changing Role
Sanju Samson, once a reliable opener for India, is now facing uncertainty regarding his position in the batting order. Last year, he formed a successful partnership with Abhishek Sharma, dominating the opening position. However, with Gill’s promotion to vice-captain, Samson has been shifted down to the middle order.
In recent performances, Samson has showcased his skills in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scoring 51, 43, 46, and 73 runs. Despite his impressive form, captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed that the batting lineup would remain unchanged for the series, with Gill set to lead off.
Competition for the Middle Order
- Jitesh Sharma is also in contention for a middle-order spot.
- In the last T20I against Australia, Jitesh replaced Samson as wicketkeeper-batter and scored an unbeaten 22.
- His performance has intensified the internal competition for selection.
“We gave Sanju opportunities. He is flexible to bat anywhere from No. 3 to 6,” Suryakumar said, acknowledging the depth of talent in the squad.
Injury Updates and Team Dynamics
Both Gill and Pandya are fit and ready to play, which adds depth to the Indian lineup. Pandya missed the Asia Cup final due to a quadriceps injury, while Gill has recovered from a neck injury sustained earlier this year.
“Both are looking healthy and fit. Hardik’s return opens up options for the playing XI,” Suryakumar highlighted. The experience and versatility of these players will enhance the team’s performance as they prepare for the series against South Africa.
