Pontus Holmberg Returns, Strengthens Lightning’s Defense Against Maple Leafs

Pontus Holmberg is set to confront the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first time on Monday. He will be playing on the third line for the Tampa Bay Lightning at Scotiabank Arena. The Swedish forward was originally drafted by the Maple Leafs in the sixth round of the 2018 NHL Draft, where he earned a reputation as a dependable player in Toronto’s bottom-six. After contributing 19 goals and 30 assists in 159 regular-season games, he was not offered a qualifying contract due to the team’s salary cap constraints.
Holmberg’s contract from last season was valued at $827,500, and with arbitration rights, he anticipated a salary increase. The Maple Leafs opted against extending an offer, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent when free agency opened on July 1.
Pontus Holmberg’s New Chapter with the Lightning
Shortly after the free agency period began, Holmberg signed a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The deal is worth an average annual value (AAV) of $1.55 million per season. Holmberg expressed excitement about his new opportunity, stating, “I was ready to come back but something happened. But I’m happy to be here. It’s a new start for me.”
Holmberg’s impact on the Lightning has been immediate. He currently plays on the team’s shutdown line alongside Yanni Gourde and Zemgus Girgensons. Lightning head coach Jon Cooper praised him, saying, “I love that kid. His strength on his skates and with the puck… he protects it. When you need to kill another team’s momentum, just put it on his stick and he’ll do it all by himself.”
Transitioning Positions and Building Connections
During his time in Toronto, Holmberg primarily played as a center but has adapted to playing on the wing this season. He enjoys this new position and has quickly integrated with his teammates. His approachable nature has made a positive impression, especially during team gatherings.
- Signed with Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1
- Two-year contract valued at $1.55 million AAV

Holmberg’s ability to bond with his teammates has not gone unnoticed. Cooper mentioned the team’s rookie party and commented on Holmberg being a popular choice among players for team MVP. “He’s fit in really well with us,” Cooper noted, highlighting Holmberg’s seamless transition into the locker room and on the ice.
As Holmberg prepares to face his former team, he brings a renewed sense of purpose to his game. His development has set the stage for what could be a significant season with the Lightning.
