Texas Football Faces Key Losses as Backup RB, QB Enter Transfer Portal

Texas football is grappling with significant departures as two key players, backup running back CJ Baxter and quarterback Trey Owens, prepare to enter the transfer portal. Both athletes confirmed their intentions through social media, setting the stage for their next moves.

CJ Baxter’s Journey

CJ Baxter, a redshirt sophomore, has had a challenging season. He played in only eight games, struggling with a hamstring injury and recently returning from a more serious knee injury that sidelined him for the entire 2024 campaign. Despite this, Baxter had 54 carries for 196 yards this season.

  • 2023 Season Stats:
    • Games Played: 8
    • Rushing Attempts: 54
    • Yards: 196
  • Freshman Season Performance:
    • Attempts: 138
    • Yards: 659
    • Touchdowns: 5

Once a five-star recruit, Baxter displayed his potential in the past but fell behind Quintrevion Wisner on the depth chart this season. Furthermore, this marks the second loss for Texas’ running back room, following Jerrick Gibson’s mid-season transfer.

Trey Owens’ Transition

Quarterback Trey Owens, also set to enter the transfer portal, is a four-star prospect from the 2024 recruiting class. His time at Texas has been limited, as he never rose above third on the team’s depth chart. With three seasons of eligibility left, Owens will seek new opportunities to showcase his skills.

The upcoming transfer portal period, opening on January 2, will be a critical moment for both athletes as they consider their options moving forward. As Texas football faces these key losses, the coaching staff may need to reassess their strategies and depth going into the next season.
