Hulkenberg Aims for Impressive P5 Finish in Abu Dhabi

Nico Hulkenberg aims to achieve an impressive P5 finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Kick Sauber driver concluded both practice sessions in fifth place, setting the stage for a competitive qualifying round.
Strong Performance in Practice Sessions
Hulkenberg’s promising start on the asphalt of the Yas Marina Circuit comes after an unfortunate early crash at the Qatar Grand Prix, which halted his points run. During Free Practice 1, he achieved P5, while his teammate Gabriel Bortoleto secured P7. In the following practice session, Hulkenberg maintained his fifth position, and Bortoleto improved to P6.
Looking Ahead to Qualifying
When discussing the potential for Saturday’s qualifying, Hulkenberg expressed optimism, stating, “I hope so – that’s the target and the ambition.” He noted the team’s solid performance and the car’s balance as positive signs for what lay ahead.
- Free Practice 1: Hulkenberg P5, Bortoleto P7
- Free Practice 2: Hulkenberg P5, Bortoleto P6
Despite the promising lap times, Hulkenberg acknowledged the competitive nature of the field, indicating that many drivers who missed FP1 might pose a challenge during qualifying. “It’s nice to be quick on Friday, but it’s more important to have it tomorrow when it matters,” he remarked.
Team Dynamics and Championship Goals
Bortoleto also emphasized the uncertainty of maintaining strong lap times throughout the weekend. He remained confident in their potential, noting, “It’s just Free Practice,” reflecting an understanding of the evolving dynamics of the race. Both drivers recognize the importance of qualifying for their team’s strategy in the ongoing fight for eighth place in the Teams’ Championship.
- Kick Sauber currently P9 in the Championship standings
- Five points behind Haas
Bortoleto stated, “I hope both cars are in a good position tomorrow for Quali because it’s going to be very important for us to have a good starting position on Sunday.” This sentiment reflects the team’s urgency to capitalize on their competitive edge and secure valuable points as the season progresses.
