Myanmar Citizens Vote Early in Bangkok Elections

Myanmar’s ongoing political instability continues to influence its citizens living abroad, as early voting commenced in Bangkok for upcoming elections. Following the military coup in 2021 that thrust the country into turmoil, the junta has pledged that these elections will guide Myanmar toward peace and democracy.

Early Voting Details

The phased election process is scheduled to officially start in select areas of Myanmar in late December. However, overseas voting is already underway, with several Myanmar embassies facilitating the process. Key locations include:

  • Bangkok, Thailand
  • Hong Kong
  • Singapore
  • Chiang Mai

On the first day of voting in Bangkok, a noticeable police presence was observed. Approximately 25 individuals registered within the first two hours at the embassy. Many voters, however, opted not to provide comments on the election. Reports indicate there are about 500,000 documented Myanmar nationals in Bangkok, according to Thailand’s labor ministry.

Population Estimates

The International Organization for Migration has estimated that around 4.1 million Myanmar nationals reside in Thailand. A significant portion of this population consists of individuals who fled the ongoing conflict in Myanmar and may lack proper documentation.

Challenges and Criticism

The embassy officials were unable to specify how many individuals had completed the necessary voting registration forms, which had a deadline of October 15. Notably, excluded lawmakers from the previous government, human rights monitors, and anti-junta rebel groups have denounced this election. They assert it serves merely as a façade to maintain military authority.

Adding to the electoral tension, the military government has enacted stringent new laws that threaten severe penalties for those opposing the election or protesting against it, with potential prison sentences of up to ten years.
