Poundland Announces Additional Store Closures: Full List Inside

Discount retailer Poundland has announced a significant number of store closures as part of its ongoing restructuring efforts. The company, now owned by Gordon Brothers, plans to close an additional 14 locations by early February. This is in addition to 19 stores already scheduled for closure. By early next year, Poundland anticipates having shut down over 100 stores since it began its restructuring process.

Poundland’s Restructuring Strategy

Since the beginning of the turnaround plan, Poundland has focused on reducing the number of its least profitable shops. Initially, the retailer had around 800 locations. Following the closures, the total number is expected to decrease to between 650 and 700 stores across the UK.

Current and Upcoming Store Closures

As part of their closure strategy, clearance sales featuring discounts up to 40% have begun at the stores designated for closure. The following locations are confirmed for closure:

  • Lancaster, Lancashire: 19 December
  • Northampton Sixfields, Northamptonshire: 31 December
  • Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset: 24 December
  • Hammersmith, Greater London: 24 December
  • Prestatyn, Denbighshire: 31 December
  • Faversham, Kent: 6 January
  • Liverpool, Merseyside: 15 January
  • Yeovil, Somerset: 16 January
  • Nottingham Eastpoint, Nottinghamshire: 22 January
  • Lymington, Hampshire: 23 January
  • Christchurch (47 High Street), Dorset: 23 January
  • Bristol Avon Meads, Bristol: 29 January
  • Winton, Dorset: 6 February
  • Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, Scotland: 8 February

Future Plans for Poundland

Poundland aims to simplify its business model, which includes reverting to a classic pricing structure of £1, £2, and £3 for grocery items across its stores. Darren MacDonald, the UK country manager, expressed that while closing stores is disappointing, the company is committed to providing exceptional value to customers until the final days of operation at each location.

As the closures unfold, Poundland is optimistic about its future and looks forward to welcoming customers to a more focused and sustainable number of stores across the UK.
