In Albany County, protests against Avelo Airlines are intensifying. Activists are calling for the airline to terminate its contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The group Indivisible Albany, led by organizer Marianna Achlaoug, strongly opposes the airline’s connection to ICE.
Avelo Airlines Contract Under Fire
The protests are fueled by concerns over human dignity and justice. “We want them out of Albany County,” Achlaoug stated, highlighting the ethical implications of Avelo’s operations. Demonstrators, some adorned in chains to symbolize the plight of detained individuals, urge local leaders to take a decisive stance.
Voices from the Community
Richard McGrath, another activist from Indivisible Albany, emphasized the principle of fair treatment under the law. He remarked, “Our country is supposed to be based on the rule of law and fair treatment for everyone.”
Avelo’s Operations and Changes
In June, New York State Senator Pat Fahy noted that Avelo’s ICE-related flights primarily originated from Texas and Arizona. However, the airline has since revised its operational approach. Avelo is no longer servicing Arizona and has reduced its flights from the West Coast.

Protesters argue that these operational shifts indicate that Avelo is unwanted in places like Albany County. Achlaoug pointed out the airline’s withdrawal from the West Coast as evidence of growing discontent. “We have been doing this for 7 months. We are not going anywhere. Why have you not budged?” she questioned.
Company Stance on Protests
Avelo Airlines has publicly acknowledged the right to peaceful protest. However, the company asserts its commitment to maintaining operations. Despite the ongoing protests, Avelo continues to offer its flight services from Albany.
