American climber Sasha DiGiulian has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first woman to free-climb El Capitan’s longest route, known as the Platinum route. Describing the experience as one of the most challenging climbs of her life, DiGiulian shared her excitement after reaching the summit. “When we got to the top, I just started laughing because I hadn’t walked in so long,” she said in a phone interview.

The ascent of this approximately 3,000-foot granite wall at Yosemite National Park took DiGiulian and her climbing partner, Elliot Faber, a total of 23 days. This included nine days of waiting on a ledge due to adverse weather conditions. DiGiulian has long dreamed of climbing El Capitan and this journey was a culmination of years of dedication.
Preparation for the Ascent
- DiGiulian and Faber arrived in Yosemite on October 8.
- The initial plan was to spend 14-16 days on the Platinum route, which consists of 39 pitches.
- They prepared for the climb by establishing rope points and transporting over 30 gallons of water to access later.
Faber had previously mapped the route but had never climbed it until this adventure. Their ascent began on November 3, but they soon faced unexpected challenges.
Challenges Encountered
On the ninth day of their climb, an unforeseen storm halted their progress. The duo established camp on the 32nd pitch, known as the Golden Edge, where they dealt with harsh weather conditions. They used a Jetboil for cooking, consumed freeze-dried meals, and relied on battery power for reading.
DiGiulian noted that the storm posed both a mental and physical challenge, stripping them of a sense of normalcy. However, they also took time to appreciate stunning mountain views and the impact of their journey.
Final Ascent and Historic Summit
After 18 days on the wall, they resumed climbing under difficult conditions. Just short of the summit, Faber had to leave due to a family emergency. After waiting for two days in hopes of finishing together, he ultimately gave DiGiulian his blessing to summit alone.
On November 26, accompanied by friends and a camera crew, DiGiulian reached the top of El Capitan, marking her as the first woman to complete this significant route. This climb required immense perseverance, particularly given that most climbers typically take 5-7 days for easier routes.
