Chicago Braces for Winter Storm: 6-12 Inches of Snow Expected

Chicago is preparing for a significant winter storm that could bring 6 to 12 inches of snow this weekend. A winter storm warning will be in effect from 3 a.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday across the Chicago area and northwest Indiana. This storm marks the city’s most substantial November snowfall in seven years.

Snowfall Predictions and Timing

The snow is anticipated to start late Friday night, becoming widespread by 7 a.m. Saturday. The heaviest snowfall is likely to occur Saturday afternoon, with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour from noon until 6 p.m.

Travel Conditions

Travel during the storm is highly discouraged. Expected snowfall will create hazardous road conditions, including slick surfaces and reduced visibility. Motorists should prepare for challenging travel circumstances.

Post-Storm Weather

  • By Sunday afternoon, light lake-enhanced snow showers may occur.
  • Winds are expected to gust up to 30 mph, causing blowing and drifting snow.
  • Wind chill values will dip into the teens and 20s.

As the storm eases, conditions on the roads are predicted to improve throughout Sunday. However, temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for the next 14 days, contributing to a continued snowpack across the region.

Future Snow Events

In addition to this weekend’s storm, the Chicago area is expecting two lighter snow events next week. These lighter snowfalls are projected to arrive Monday night and Wednesday, further impacting travel and daily activities.

Residents should remain informed and exercise caution as winter weather conditions develop throughout Chicago and northwest Indiana this weekend.
