Consumers Energy Deploys 200 Crews Statewide for Weekend Winter Storm Prep

Consumers Energy is taking proactive measures to prepare for a significant winter storm affecting Michigan this weekend. The utility company is deploying nearly 200 crews across the state to ensure the prompt restoration of power in anticipation of severe weather conditions.
Winter Storm Preparations
The storm is expected to hit Michigan on Saturday and Sunday, following recent severe weather that disrupted power for over 60,000 customers earlier this week. Crews worked diligently through the Thanksgiving holiday to restore power after high winds ravaged the state.
“We want our customers to know that we continue to stand ready throughout the weekend to restore power as safely and quickly as possible,” said Norm Kapala, Consumers Energy’s vice president of grid operations. The company has fully restored power to all affected customers and is focused on tackling the upcoming challenges posed by snowfall over the holiday weekend.
Weather Forecast and Safety Advisories
Forecasts indicate that snow accumulation will be gradual statewide, especially along the West Michigan lakeshore, where higher totals are expected. Blowing and drifting snow might severely reduce visibility and create challenging travel conditions.
To ensure safety, Consumers Energy urges residents to stay informed of travel advisories, as well as winter weather watches and warnings.
Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
Consumers Energy emphasizes the importance of safety during this weather event. The public is advised to maintain a safe distance from utility crews working on power restoration. Furthermore, residents are encouraged to prepare for potential outages by taking the following steps:
- Charge electronic devices.
- Have emergency batteries or charging stations available.
- Assemble an emergency kit that includes flashlights, extra batteries, water, canned food, and blankets.
- Ensure that enough medication, baby supplies, and pet food are available, if needed.
- Unplug sensitive electronics like TVs and computers.
- Create a food safety plan, understanding how long food can remain safe without power.
Customers can report outages and receive updates about restoration efforts through Consumers Energy’s website or mobile app.
