UK Faces Coldest Autumn Night; Health Alerts Issued

The UK experienced its coldest autumn night on record, with temperatures plummeting across the country. This chill was felt particularly in Scotland, where temperatures dropped to a frigid -12.6°C. It marked the coldest recorded November night in 15 years.

Widespread Disruptions Due to Snow

Heavy snowfall impacted major roads and public transport on Thursday, causing significant disruptions. Snow blanketed various regions, leading to school closures and power outages.

  • Scotland: Tomintoul recorded -12.6°C.
  • Wales: Swyddffynnon saw -7.2°C.
  • England: Shap experienced -6.7°C.
  • Northern Ireland: Katesbridge recorded -6°C.

Over 100 schools in north-east Scotland were forced to close, alongside closures in North Yorkshire and Wales. In Pembrokeshire alone, 40 schools remained shut. The National Grid reported several incidents due to adverse weather conditions in these areas.

Health Alerts Issued Across Regions

As temperatures plummeted, health officials issued cold health alerts. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) placed amber alerts in the North West, North East, and Yorkshire and Humber regions. These alerts highlighted the potential risks to vulnerable individuals, especially the elderly.

A yellow ice warning was also in effect for northern England, cautioning residents about slippery conditions. These warnings remained until mid-day on Friday.

Outlook Moving Forward

Friday marked the end of the cold snap, with meteorologists predicting a transition to milder, wetter weather over the weekend. Temperatures are expected to range from 3°C to 8°C. Areas like Kent and East Anglia may see a few showers, while southern Scotland and Northern Ireland could experience rain later in the day.

National Rail advised passengers to check travel information due to residual disruptions from the previous day’s weather. Train services to Glasgow Central resumed normal operations after previous delays caused by damaged overhead wires.

Community Concerns for Vulnerable Individuals

Charity representatives expressed concern for the elderly and those with health issues during the cold snap. Alex Parker from Age UK stressed the importance of ensuring vulnerable community members are safe and warm, and have access to essential supplies.

The cold weather’s impact on daily life was evident, as many locals reported difficulties navigating the conditions. Residents were encouraged to support neighbors and friends during this challenging period.
