Thanksgiving Travel Disrupted by Major Cross-Country Storm

A significant storm is anticipated to disrupt travel across the United States during the Thanksgiving holiday. This system threatens to delay millions of travelers as they embark on their holiday journeys.
Storm Timeline and Impact
The storm is predicted to begin affecting Southern California this Friday. Residents can expect heavy rainfall, with rates potentially reaching one inch per hour. Urban areas might see total precipitation between one to two inches, which could lead to flash flooding.
As the storm progresses, it will move into the deserts of Southern Arizona on Saturday, bringing additional heavy rain. Once past Arizona, the system will then shift toward the Southern Plains, exacerbating the flooding risks in areas already impacted by a previous weather system.
Predicted Rainfall and Flood Risks
- Southern California: Heavy rain on Friday; possible mudslides and rocks.
- Southern Arizona: Expected rain on Saturday.
- South Texas to Upper Midwest: Heavy rain likely by Monday.
- East Coast: Light rain and travel delays anticipated on Tuesday.
Thanksgiving Travel Forecast
The storm coincides with one of the busiest travel periods in the United States. Over 82 million Americans are projected to travel at least 50 miles from home from November 25 to December 1, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).
Adam Stahl, acting Deputy TSA Administrator, commented on the busy travel days ahead. “We project that the Sunday after Thanksgiving will be one of the busiest travel days in TSA history,” he stated.
Flight Operations and Recommendations
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports that next week will feature the highest air traffic seen in 15 years. The FAA has forecasted approximately 52,185 flights for Tuesday alone.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford highlighted the commitment of air traffic controllers and FAA employees during this busy season. He urged travelers to be patient, arrive early, and check flight statuses with airlines.
The National Weather Service advises travelers to stay informed about weather conditions prior to their trips and adjust their plans accordingly. Travelers are encouraged to carry valid identification and consider enrolling in TSA PreCheck for a smoother experience.
