“GSC Game World Faces Challenges Bringing Stalker 2 to PS5”

GSC Game World is making waves by releasing Stalker 2 on the PS5, marking a significant milestone in the game’s ongoing development journey. This transition comes amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which poses notable challenges for the development team based primarily in Kyiv.
Challenges Amidst Conflict
Technical producer Yevhenii Kulyk elaborated on the hurdles involved in porting Stalker 2. “Most challenges stem from the war,” he noted, highlighting issues like electricity outages that have impacted workflow. The team has had to innovate, using power banks and portable power stations to keep operations running smoothly.
Kulyk shared that they have even deployed Starlink technology to maintain internet connectivity for team members. “They are doing the most amazing job possible, even in this situation,” he remarked about the team’s resilience and dedication.
Innovative Gameplay Features for PS5
The new PS5 version of Stalker 2 introduces an array of immersive features. The developers utilized the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers, which provide unique feedback for each weapon in the game. Advanced haptics also enhance the experience, allowing players to physically sense anomalies as they approach.

Logistical Hurdles for Development Kits
Shipping PS5 development kits to a city under siege presented a formidable challenge. Kulyk explained, “Shipping comes with additional risk,” given the attacks on distribution centers. To manage this, kits are sent to an office in Prague before being transported to Kyiv.
Team Structure and Work Dynamics
The team at GSC Game World is split between 280 members in Ukraine and 230 in Prague, making collaboration challenging. PR manager Zackhar Bocharov emphasized the unique strain this arrangement places on their operations. “Working between the two offices is not normal,” he stated.
Despite these challenges, the commitment to delivering a polished product has resulted in considerable success. Within three days of release, Stalker 2 sold one million copies, with a total audience reaching six million players, including Game Pass users.
Looking Ahead
With Stalker 2 now available on PS5 alongside its other platforms, the focus shifts to post-launch support and upcoming content. As the team adapts to their new working conditions, they aim to ensure a high-quality experience for both returning and new players.
